Today's Key Movers

Largest price and volume moves across tracked commodities, plus weather risk
Mexican colored bell — 11 lb
▲ 65–82% in one week
Red XL/jumbo went $8.50 → $15.50 since Aug 7; orange and yellow +65%. Still 33–39% below the same week last year, so this is a snap-back off an unusually low base, not a new high.
Baja California crossings
▼ 78%
29,605 lb vs a 133,425 lb 30-day daily average — Baja has effectively stopped crossing. Season handoff.
Sinaloa / Nogales crossings
▲ 56%
351,627 lb, well above its 225,580 lb month average. Sinaloa is picking up what Baja dropped.
California-Central volume
▲ 36%
2.07M lb vs a 1.53M lb month average — the largest single origin moving today, domestic or import.
August seasonal pattern
▼ 6–18%
Across 7 years, XL green bell falls every August in every region that ships then — Carolinas −18%, San Joaquin −7%, Michigan −6% vs their own annual means, after all three run positive in July.
Coachella Valley heat
▲ 110°F
Warming to ~110°F midweek with an Air Quality Alert. Off-season locally; relevant to Fall planting prep.
FOB Price History

Price Over Time by Reporting Region

Weekly mean of the USDA "mostly" range, FOB shipping point, conventional. Each line is one reporting region; the band beneath the axis shows which regions were actually quoting in each month — so you can read the price trend against who was supplying it. Click a legend entry to isolate a region.

Terminal Market Pricing ⚠ not FOB

Terminal prices are wholesale at the receiving market (New York, Chicago) and include freight and handling markup. They are not comparable to FOB shipping-point prices and are deliberately excluded from every table and chart above, and from the price-history graph.

Border Crossings & Shipment Volume

Bell Pepper Crossings —

Daily volume in pounds. Mexican border ports are grouped into the growing regions they serve (Nogales → Sinaloa/Sonora; Otay Mesa & Calexico → Baja; Pharr/Laredo/Roma → central-eastern Mexico). Weekly-reporting origins are excluded from the daily view so they can't create phantom Saturday spikes.

Volume Trend — 120 Days

Daily crossings are heavily weekday-shaped (near-zero weekends), so the solid lines are a 7-day rolling average — that removes the weekend sawtooth and leaves the actual supply trend. Faint marks behind are the raw daily values. The dashed line is total volume over the same 120 days one year ago, so you can see whether current supply is genuinely heavy or just seasonally normal.
USDA AMS Specialty Crops Movement, bell pepper. Weekly-reporting origins excluded from the daily view.

Volume History — 2020 to Present

Long-run movement. Seasonal overlays every year on a week-of-year axis, so you can read when each source typically turns on and off. Monthly history shows the raw run of totals. Values are pounds per shipping day, which keeps short holiday weeks comparable to full ones.
Truck Freight

Full Truckload Rates — New York / Chicago / Atlanta

Per load including brokers' fees, 48–53 ft refrigerated trailer, origin → destination receiving market. Rate does not vary by commodity for the same lane, so this is origin-level, not commodity-level.

Sources and lag. Prices are USDA AMS Shipping Point (FOB) reports, exported 17 Aug 2026, covering 2 Jan 2020 – 14 Aug 2026. The latest FOB report is dated 14 Aug 2026; movement runs one day behind at 13 Aug 2026. USDA does not quote every district/pack combination every day, so day-over-day compares each series against its own most recent prior quote and labels the gap in days rather than assuming yesterday.

Data normalization. Three schema inconsistencies in the USDA export are corrected: pepper color moved from the variety column (2020) to properties (2021+) and changed capitalization mid-2024; district names were renamed over time (Santa Maria ↔ Santa Maria District; five Imperial/Coachella variants), so raw districts map to stable regions with the original string preserved; size labels were uppercase in 2020 only. Without these, roughly two-thirds of the history silently disappears from any filtered series.

Known gaps. Canada has no Shipping Point price coverage — terminal-market data is the only route to Ontario greenhouse pricing and has not been loaded yet, so Canadian pricing is blank by design rather than by omission. Movement data covers bell pepper only. Live weather fetches failed for several regions this run; those panels show seasonal-normal context and are labeled as such.
